Will formatting mp4 reduce memory?

It is a 4GB (3.83 GB to be precise) When I turn it on, all of the words on the screen are messed up. Now I can't see which song I have playing or which video I want to watch. Also, when I connect it to the computer, Instead of the little picture that shows it's connected, it just shows a blank screen. Should I format it? If I format it, will I lose memory? Please don't say anything like it's just Chinese junk or something unhelpful like that.
