What Is MP4? MP4: Smaller the size, higher the quality
Jun 18th, 2009 by admin

Nowadays, the most famous music or video files are MP4s. We people have downloaded MP4 files for many times but still most of the people do not know technically what MP4 is and how it is used.

Many people generally think that MP4 is the newer version or successor of MP3 files. But it is not true as MP3 files are the audio format and MP4s are audio and video format files. The technology that used for compressing the files in the MP4 is quite similar to the technology of MP3 but more complex and advance than the MP3. The technology compresses the files and makes them smaller in size. And it is the advantage over the other technologies for larger video files, as we know in the last few decades the video files were quite larger in the size.

MP4 is the short form of MPEG-4 Part 14 where MPEG stands for Motion Picture Expert Group. The normal extension of .mp4 makes the files known as MP4. The reason behind their day by day gaining popularity is that they are just not only smaller in size, but the quality and performance of the video (and audio too) is also greater than ever. Even the MP4 files can be downloaded easily and rapidly from the internet.

The codec technology that is used for compressing the files is included with the MP4 technology. And this technology makes the video much smaller in the size by eliminating the redundant information from the video during compression. That’s why .mp4 files are that much popular.

.mp4 files can be played through many types of software that are compatible with the technology of MP4. Media Player Classic, GOM player, Quick Time Player, VLC Media Player, iTunes etc. are the software that are compatible with the MP4 technology and can play video or audio .mp4 files. Even some hardware also such as SONY PlayStation Portable, iPod, Xbox 360 are compatible with the MP4 technologies.

Due to this outstanding popularity of MP4s there are many MP4 players available now a day and most popular among them are PSP (PlayStation Portable) and many types of iPods. These players support the .mp4 files for audio and video format. The second reason for the popularity of MP4 players is they are quite handy and easy to use. They are available in different storage limitations. Many players contain storage capacity up to 80 GB or more and they can stay in your pocket or on your hand. These players give the tremendous audio and video output as they are using the MP4 technologies.

Even one can easily find the many types of .mp4 convertor, software that converts format of files to the .mp4 format. With the popularity of MP4 technology and MP4 players these kinds of convertors are also gaining the popularity.

Free MP4 Downloads From The Internet
Jun 9th, 2009 by admin

One of the big draws for the Internet these days is the availability of free downloads of all kinds. The allure of getting something for nothing can not be denied but what are the risks involved? The Internet is a new media for many people and there are plenty of sites that take advantage of the novice. The better known mp3 download is slowly being replaced by new formats.

There are many sites that offer mp4, torrent, and proprietary format downloads.  Peer to peer networks will often have a variety of different formats available that can require the download of not only the media you wish to receive but often special players to make it accessible as well.
Peer to peer, or P2P networks are probably the most common ways to find free downloads. Read the disclaimers carefully on all of these sites as few if any will guarantee that the content is free of viruses. Because the content is offered for free and there are no membership fees there is little over site so the postings can knowingly or unknowingly contain viruses, root kits, and flaws. It is also often true that what you download can be completely different from what it is labeled. Another important consideration is that on a P2P network it is very unlikely that anyone posting content actually has any distribution rights for the content so what you download could be without license and considered illegal.

The legality of downloads on the Internet is still being debated and new laws are being proposed all the time as are new protections for digital content. What is legal today may illegal tomorrow and even content that you pay for could be blocked by future digital protections or regulation if you cannot prove the legitimacy of your ownership.
A membership site where you pay a fee to access a list of down-loadable content is more secure from viruses but may or may not be more legitimate in offering legal downloads. Again, read all the disclaimers and find out what is the source of the music.

If the site is cooperating with the musicians or recoding companies then what you download is likely to be, and to stay, legal. If the source is other users like a P2P network or if the site does not disclose the source of the music (or other content) then it is good to be cautious. On the Internet, as in any other area of life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The number of people looking for free content to download from the Internet is large enough to be tempting for any group to exploit. Whether this is hackers wanting access to your computer or sellers wanting to get your money while the legal environment is still confusing, the advice that the buyer beware is still applicable even when you are getting something for free.
