If you’re looking for a case that’s a little more understated, check out Vaja’s sporty, stripe-wielding Classic Retro Dockable iPhone case ($75 and up). Now known as the iPod Classic , Apple will offer a 160GB version of the regular iPod, which is enough storage for 40,000 songs, according to Jobs. It is thinner than the regular iPod and has better battery life, enough to handle 40 hours of audio. The low-end iPod classic (at 80GB) is now thinner than the 30GB thin model that preceded it. Jobs claims the new iPod gets 30 hours of audio playback and five hours of video plaback on a single charge.

If your only purpose in buying a new iPod is to play music, then the classic is for you. No fancy gimmicks here: just 120GB of hard disk, a 2.5in colour screen and a Click Wheel. I connect my classic to my home stereo system which plays music throughout the house. Substituting my iPhone (or Touch) involves limitations.

First, Apple’s fifth-generation iPod sports a 2.5-inch LCD screen which, like previous color iPods, can display album art and photographs, but can also play video, including music videos, television episodes, video podcasts, and home movies. The new iPods are available in 30 GB and 60 GB capacities at $300 and $400, respectively: Apple says the 60 GB model can hold up to 150 hours of video. Our Belkin iTalk voice recorder, which worked fine with our fifth-gen iPod, only generates an “unsupported device” message. To watch a quick YouTube clip on the first generation, you needed to grab a pair of headphones to hear the audio. Now you can just listen to it without headphones, expanding the audience to friends or other people around you.
The iPod touch is much more that a media player - and much more of a general purpose - but small - computer. This potential is not currently harnessed by the software that Apple ship with the product - but more official software will follow, both from Apple and from third parties. Although we’re generally used to handling touch-screens with a stylus, the Touch is completely functional by the use of our fingers. If we try to describe it all, our video files get so big that they’re practically unusable. But if we throw away the wrong information, the picture deteriorates. The new iPods can play any MPEG-4 file on its 320×240 screen, so you’re not limited to just what iTunes offers. Think video podcasts and the ability to rip your own content and take it with you. It has been around long enough and has a high enough profile that it’s easy to forget that. While most high-tech firms focus on one or two sectors, Apple does all of them at once. Web Browsing: Apple has received a lot of press for its use of the touch screen in web browsing. Pages load very quickly indeed and users double tap on an area of a screen to zoom and the page can be moved around with just a finger. The guy on the second video says he didn’t find anything useful with his unlocked Touch, all I can say is he’s not using it properly, I can do just about everything on mine. While one can only watch a fluffy ball for so long, after a while it is shame that it only exists behind the screen, as it looks so soft it should be able to be touched. Once inside the store, many have decided to buy Macintosh computers or notebooks. The financial highlight of Apple’s fiscal second quarter was the sale of 2.29 million Macintosh computers, a 51% increase from the previous year.
